Quiss support contract for Arriva WiFi on track

Managed IT services specialist Quiss Technology is celebrating the latest in a long line of new business wins, following its appointment to support the wireless network for Arriva Trains Wales.

Arriva Trains Wales provides inter-urban, rural and commuter passenger rail services throughout Wales and the English border counties. With more than 2,000 employees, 245 stations, 125 train sets and 1,009 route miles to manage, it operates 956 services every weekday, moving millions of people every year.

Commercial Services Manager at Quiss Technology, Matt Rhodes, commented: “The WiFi network in question is not for public use, but essential to the efficient running of services thanks to the information exchanged between the various major stations on the network and the company’s head office in Cardiff.

“The network allows users to access applications used to run rail services safely and efficiently. In the past, support for this network was provided by an in-house resource and was limited to office hours. Arriva now has the support of our 30-strong helpdesk, together with field service engineers and network specialists – all available with one call or email.

“We are monitoring the wireless controllers, more than 40 access points and the connectivity between them. Our pro-active monitoring ensures the network is covered 24/7 and includes the repair or replacement of the current hardware, liaising with third-party manufacturers to handle warranty issues when necessary.

“At this stage, the network covers 19 sites, central to Arriva’s operations, but we hope in time to roll out our brand of network support to more of Arriva’s activities, helping their management team as they look to increase efficiency throughout their business.”

Paul Stern of Arriva Trains Wales commented: “The WiFi network in question is of growing importance to our operations. The proactive support provided by Quiss, instils greater confidence that the network will be available at all times and if something does go wrong they have the resources to resolve issues quickly.

“Quiss impressed us with their down-to-earth pragmatic approach and can-do attitude – it’s what a growing business like ours needs. The fact they will liaise with the equipment manufacturers and swap hardware that’s not theirs if there are problems demonstrates their willingness to go the extra mile to ensure our service is not disrupted.”

Rhodes concludes: “To have a large international business of this stature recognise the quality of our service is very satisfying. It shows we have the resources and capabilities to impress the biggest businesses when they are looking for a proactive service for their IT systems and the peace of mind we can deliver.
