SGH Martineau was one of the Midlands’ oldest and most respected full service commercial law firms, with a reputation built on close collaboration with their clients and an innovative sector-focussed approach to growing the business. The firm has since merged with Shakespeares LLP to create Shakespeare Martineau LLP, a top 50 UK law firm.
Recognising the need to keep clients more closely informed with the progress of cases and fees billed against budget, SGH Martineau sought a solution that offered an accessible way to present data. The ideal solution would ensure the client could access the information when required, without having to engage any member of the team at SGH Martineau to deliver the necessary data in an email or bespoke report, saving time and keeping costs under control.
The IT team at SGH Martineau were aware of the possibility of developing a client portal using SharePoint, but did not have the necessary resources to meet the deadline after the firm secured the new business.
We undertook a detailed review of client’s requirements, understanding what information they needed to see and in what format it would best be presented. Amongst the elements to be included in the solution, were a cost tracker, an events calendar, news feed and briefing notes, all of which would be accessible to the client via a simple username and password protected portal.
SGH Martineau already had the necessary Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise 2010 and it was just a matter of designing a solution to integrate with their system.
The solution, based on SharePoint Excel services, utilised Excel spreadsheets as the data source for each of the individual elements.
Designing the solution required a team effort with our systems architect and developers working closely with the team at SGH Martineau to ensure we were able to tailor the out-of-the-box SharePoint solution to the client’s exact needs.
From start to finish, the portal was built in just eight days, with two days to publish the site, create the documentation to support its use and deliver the training necessary for the successful operation of the portal, including end-user documentation to support SGH Martineau’s client.
Many firms, particularly larger ones already have Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise 2010 and often just lack the resources to take advantage, which is where we can help with our years’ of experience in building bespoke solutions like client portals.

The firm’s clients can now access important information more easily and see it in a graphical format that allowsthe position to be more readily understood, without the need for bespoke reports or emails on demand.
