Why outsource your IT operations?
<< Back to Headlines

People are always asking why they should outsource their IT management and infrastructure and I have taken the launch of our new website as an opportunity to share a few of my thoughts.

It is almost unimaginable to think of a business functioning successfully without IT to manage at least some part of its operation. Even small businesses can be heavily reliant on IT, particularly with the growth of communication channels and remote working. The humble computer is helping businesses grow through increased efficiency and more effective communication; it is the best way to be organised and support the needs of staff and customers alike.

Having the wrong IT infrastructure reduces productivity. If it delays the ability to find data, customer information or fails to allow staff to connect remotely with their applications and information, a business is not making the most of its investment in IT. The increasing pace of technology development and the increasing dependence on the successful integration of IT systems means it is essential that the core IT infrastructure exploits the most cost effective technology, whilst meeting all the needs of the business.

Outsourcing - the competitive advantage

Outsourcing is growing in popularity because in practice it is seen to deliver a competitive advantage. It's about a lot more than just a 24 hour helpdesk to assist when a user finds a printer has disappeared - the Windows driver has gone missing rather than audacious office equipment theft. Outsourcing IT management for a business delivers a number of benefits, all capable of improving its current operation and helping it become more future-proof.

Productivity - If a business has an internal IT resource, it can easily find itself overwhelmed with simultaneous problems that cannot all be dealt with at one time. This often leads to lower productivity and can easily lead to frustration and poor morale amongst users. A problem dealt with quickly, instills users with confidence in their IT infrastructure, as opposed to a lack of confidence brought about by an in-house team taking hours to investigate even the simplest problem.

Reporting - Every issue generates a report, so outsourcing IT also offers the opportunity for a business to receive detailed information on all network activity. This enable the management team to make informed IT decisions, rather than guesstimates based on popular misconceptions.

Training - Often outsourcing the management of IT will include a degree of staff training, which allows a business to keep abreast of emerging technology. The outsourcing company will have a greater appreciation of developments across other industries and will tailor training programmes to exploit emerging trends and technologies that may be beneficial to the business. This ongoing training is no longer the responsibility of the business, but the outsourcing partner.

Fast Fix - Outsourcing delivers faster response times, with real time monitoring of networks ensuring issues are identified and dealt with effectively and efficiently. Pro-active maintenance can be one of the key factors of a healthy infrastructure. These simple 'housekeeping' tasks can easily be overlooked by an overstretched internal IT resource. An outsourcing partner will have the resources to ensure core activities are dealt with, without the smaller tasks being missed.

These are just a few of the benefits as I see them, but I guess if I had to sum it up I would say outsourcing allows businesses to concentrate on what they do best, whilst we do what we do best; manage your IT.
